Massive Renovation of Plac Bankowy Square Begins This Spring

One of Warsaw’s most iconic public spaces, Plac Bankowy, will undergo a comprehensive renovation starting in April. The 85 million PLN project aims to transform the square into a modern pedestrian-friendly zone while preserving its historical character.

The redesign includes new green spaces, underground parking for 300 vehicles, improved lighting, and dedicated cycling paths. The square, which currently serves primarily as a traffic roundabout, will be reconfigured to prioritize pedestrians and public transit.

Architects from the Warsaw-based studio JEMS Architekci have designed the new layout, drawing inspiration from European cities like Copenhagen and Barcelona that have successfully converted car-centric spaces into vibrant public areas.

Local businesses have expressed both excitement and concern. While the renovation promises increased foot traffic, the 18-month construction timeline will temporarily disrupt access to shops and restaurants in the area.
